The Imposter este povestea unui maestru într-ale disimulării, o investigaţie documentaristică, care-şi plimbă lama de cuţit între true crime documentary şi stylish noir mystery. Frédéric Bourdin, francez cu trecut algerian, avea 23 de ani când s-a dat drept Nicholas Barclay, un copil de 13 ani din Texas ce dispăruse fără urmă în 1994. După trei ani de la dispariţie, copilul se face „identificat” la mii de km de casă, în Spania, raportându-se că a fost sechestrat şi torturat în tot acest timp. Familia Barclay este în culmea fericirii: în ciuda faptului că avea un accent distinctiv în limba engleză, că avea ochi căprui în loc de albaştri şi puţine amintiri despre presupusa sa copilărie în Statele Unite, tânărul este primit de „familia sa” cu braţele deschise. De ce familia Barclay decide să închidă ochii la aceste diferenţe atât de evidente? Şi dacă persoana care a ajuns în Texas nu este Nicholas Barclay, then who the fuck is he?

At the beginning of the film, the audience starts to wonder if the director is going to drop a bombshell on his interviewees: if the missing boy’s family know that Frédéric Bourdin is an imposter, how can they speak so calmly about what happened, without any bitterness of hindsight? The audience is already on tenterhooks to find out how Bourdin manages to fool both the family and the authorities, and how he will ultimately be found out: the tension becomes even greater when the audience thinks the family might only find out the truth because of this film.
