Mai departe, către Briançon, apoi spre Col d’Izoard. Pe măsură ce ne apropiem de coastă, peisajul devine mai arid, vegetaţia se schimbă, amintindu-mi deja de Provence…

Am plănuit iniţial să fac o oprire în Vars, însă m-am decis să „forţez” până la Valberg, un orăşel frumos unde am găsit liniştea pe care o căutam. De data asta m-am cazat la un bed&breakfast mai retras, la un castel pe o colină, cu privelişti fantastice împrejur. Puteţi să-l încercaţi când treceţi: se numeşte La Croix Saint Jean.

Înainte de culcare, m-am mai urcat o dată în maşină. Nu mă pot sătura: motorul ăsta, vechi de 25 de ani, merge ca un ceas şi iubeşte şoseaua în coastă. Mi-a fost recomandat un tur către Gorges du Cians et de Daluis. Ce comoară! Arată precum Colorado: canioane, stânci şi şosele spectaculoase. Îmi place să descopăr provincia prin întâmplare; ce împlinire când spontaneitatea e răsplătită astfel!

(…) I left Valloire early in the morning, wonderful breakfast in the Hotel de la Poste with real pain au chocolat!! This time, I drove up to Col du Galibier, which is a must each year in the Tour de France. This is real fun, to drive up to over  2600 m 1st gear, second, third, bend 180 degree, down in first gear and so on. You  can really get addicted to this. Again on the top wondeful views, cows and sheeps are running around freely so be aware!

Further to Briançon, then to the Col d’Izoard. The more we approach the coast, the drier the landscape gets, also the vegetation is changing, reminding me already of Provence…

I originally planned to make a stop in Vars, but then decided to push through until Valberg, a beautiful little town with great views and the tranquility I was looking for. This time, I booked into a private bed and breakfast, in a chalet on the hill with a fantastic view over all. Check it out  when you come by, it is called La Croix Saint Jean.

Before going to bed, I grabbed the car again, I cannot get enough, this 25 year old engine is working like a clock and loves the mountain drive. I was recommended a round tour to Gorges du Cians et de Daluis. What a treasure! It looks like Colorado here with canyons, rocks and nice roads again. I love to discover the countryside by surprise, how beautiful it is when spontaniousness is rewarded like this!

Tomorrow we meet the sea, I can already smell it…

corespondenţă specială din Alpii Francezi

Încă din copilărie am fost foarte ataşat de Nisa şi de Alpii Francezi – cu trecătorile lor şi liniile lor sinuoase fără de sfârşit! Aşa că am decis, aflat între două joburi, să redescopăr aceste locuri, de această dată plecând din România, cu… maşina!

Poate fi un lucru nesăbuit, dacă vă gândiţi la distanţele mari. Dar mi-am dorit asta: am părăsit Bucureştiul, cu următoarea oprire la Arad. Mi-a plăcut Hotelul Coandi, din centrul Aradului, cu preţuri rezonabile şi garaj pentru maşina mea cabrio de epocă. Următorul stop: Munchen, capitala secretă germană ce reuneşte perfect tradiţia şi inovaţia. Oprire la Hotel am Markt în Virtualienmarkt, hotel care e foarte ieftin pentru Munchen (cam 40 EUR pe noapte). 1500 de kilometri parcurşi aşa nu sunt foarte dificili, dacă nu eşti disperat să ajungi cât mai repede.

După Munchen, dai de Bodensee, un lac aflat în drum spre Elveţia. Este cel mai mare lac al Gemaniei şi deosebit de frumos (vezi fotografia de pe feribot). În loc să alegi ruta rapidă via Lindau, traversezi lacul în dreptul oraşului Meerburg, partea denord, cu ajutorul feribotului. Lacul uneşte mai multe ţări şi deschide drumul către Elveţia şi Franţa.

Următoarea atracţie este lacul Leman cu binecunoscutele oraşe Geneva, Montreux şi Lausanne pe mal. Îmi place să mă opresc la Montreux Palace pentru o cafea: acest venerabil hotel, cu vedere spre lac, te poartă în timp cel puţin 100 de ani, imaginându-ţi înalta societate lâncezind şi povestind. Lacul Leman este imens şi mult mai atrăgător pentru lux decât un lac german: luxul abundă, odată cu priveliştile perfecte. Pe malul francez poţi zări, de exemplu, pescari făcându-şi de treabă.

Acum lucrurile devin mai serioase: Alpii ţi se aştern, maiestuoşi, în faţă. Doamne, munţii din România şi chiar cei din Germania par miniaturali acum!… Am decis să urmez celebrul drum Route des Hautes Alpes (sau Route des Grandes Alpes) care te poartă prin locuri minunate şi privelişti nemaiîntâlnite. Am intrat pe drum pe la Thonon les Bains, apoi Cluses pentru a ajunge la prima trecătoare (col, în franceză): Col de la Colombiere. Această destinaţie e faimoasă datorită la fel de faimosului Tour de France: şoseaua e plină de numele fanilor care-şi susţin cilcistul favorit.

După alte câteva trecători, m-am oprit la fermă în Hateluce, unde am găsit servicii de calitate foarte bună şi de unde, mai important, poţi vedea Mont Blanc, cel mai înalt vârf muntos din regiune!!

Since my childhood, I felt very much attached to Nice and also the French Alps – with their never ending curves and “cols”. So I decided in between two jobs to discover this area again, this time from Romania, and by car!

This is quite a crazy thing, taking into account the huge distances… I wanted it so I left Bucharest first to stop in Arad. I liked Coandi Hotel in the center which has quite reasonable pricing, and a good garage for my vintage convertible car. Then another hop to Munich, the secret German capital which perfectly reunites tradition and innovation. Stop at the Hotel am Markt at Viktualienmarkt, which is very cheap for Munich, with around 40 euros. 1500 km like this, was not so hard if the desperate whish of a quick arrival does not dominate you.

Then, after leaving Munich, make a stop at the lake Bodensee, which is on the way to Switzerland. This lake is Germany’s largest, and extremly beautiful (see photo from ferry). Instead of taking the fast way via Lindau, cross the lake by the city of Meerburg, on the North side and take a ferry. This lake reunites several countries and opens the way to Switzerland, France.

Next attraction is the the Lake Leman, with Geneva, Montreux and Lausanne being pretty well known, on its shores. I like to stop over at Montreux Palace for a coffee. This old hotel with a view on the lake brings you back in time at least 100 years, imagine the high society, sitting and chatting. The Lake Leman is huge also-more luxurious though than the German lake. Everywhere luxury and perfect views (see photo with flag). On the French side you’ll find small harbors with fishermen sitting around.

Now things become more serious. The Alpes pop up in front of you so majestically. My God, the Romanian or even German mountains look like little toys… I decided to follow the well known Route des Hautes Alpes (or Route des Grandes Alpes) which brings you to all the nice places and views you have never seen before. I took the road at Thonon les Bains, then Cluses to join the first col, Col de la Colombiere. This destination is well known from the Tour de France, the whole street is full of names of fans motivating their favorite racer.

After some more cols, I stopped over at a farmhouse in Hauteluce, which is of great quality and service, with swimming pool (La Ferme du Chozal). What a great view, then, on Mont Blanc, the highest peak around!!!
