Well, if you can be a virgin at 40, then most definitely you can be a director at 12. A boy named Ryan Wyer from Dublin was unexpectedly recruited to direct a video for one of the word’s biggest producers – the one and only Aphex Twin. After seeing his fan video for minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix], uploaded on Youtube when he was about 10 years old, Warp Records on behalf of Richard D. James contacted Ryan to be the face of Cheetah EP. At the time of its official release, the virtual commentators thought this is yet another brilliant scam played by the ultrareclusive Aphex Twin. Almost no one believed that the music video for CIRKLON3 [Колхозная mix] was directed and edited by a 12-year-old punk. But the truth is always unbelievable and open to doubt. You take it or leave it.

Now ask yourself: What were you doing when you were 12 years old? Think of the things that made you stopped dreaming.

Aphex Twin has not released a music video in 17 years (since 1999’s Windowlicker, directed by the great, revolutionary Chris Cunningham). Ryan’s mother Marie told the Ryan Tubridy Show (coincidence!?) on RTÉ Radio that “at first, they wanted him [Ryan] to make the video and get their people [the people of Warp Records] to finish it. But then they saw what he was doing and they wanted him to get full credit and do everything himself. They said there was no pressure, just do what you do best.”

Aphex Twin posted on Facebook this heartwarming shot of Ryan celebrating Cheetah EP‘s release.

According to Youtube users JH’s Game Stuff and yumevlog, the Russian term колхозный from the song’s title – CIRKLON3 [Колхозная mix] – means “kolkhoz”, but basically it may mean something like “redneck” or “trashy”. (NB: Aphex Twins’ wife is of Russian origin.) Indeed, as Dubi Hyena put it, one of the biggest rifts in discussion when talking about the music of Aphex Twin is “But, how do you dance to it?!” We should all thank Ryan for the clarification.
