Chicago Public School a restricţionat de săptămâna trecută (în cele 600 de stabilimente educaţionale încorporate), printr-o adresă a CEO-ului Barbara Byrd-Bennett, accesul elevilor la binecunoscutul roman grafic al Marjanei Satrapi, Persepolis. Barbara Byrd-Bennett semnalează că: It was brought to our attention that it contains graphic language and images that are not appropriate for general use. Annette Gurley, un alt reprezentat al CPS, argumenta:

We want to make sure that the message about inhumanity [is what] kids walk away with, not the images of someone with exposed body parts urinating on someone’s back or someone’s being tortured. We are not protesting the value of this book as a work of art. We just want to make sure that when we put this book into the hands of students, they have the background, the maturity to appreciate the book.

Decizia de a interzice lectura romanului Persepolis a fost întâmpinată cu proteste din partea studenţilor şi profesorilor din Chicago. Printre pancartele folosite s-a putut citi: Banning Books… Closing Schools… What’s Next?

Editorii romanului Persepolis au numit comunicatul publicat de Chicago Public School suspect, sfătuind:

On behalf of the Kids’ Right to Read Project, we strongly urge you to reconsider the recent decision to remove the award-winning and critically acclaimed graphic novel Persepolis from 7th to 10th grade classrooms in Chicago Public Schools. (…) A work of great acclaim, School Library Journal called the book “a graphic novel of immense power and importance for Westerners of all ages.”

Persepolis a fost interzis în Iran, Libia şi Tunisia. Acesta este primul caz de cenzură al romanului în S.U.A. Publicat iniţial în Franţa, Persepolis detaliază copilăria Marjanei ispăşită în Iran, în timpul Revoluţiei Islamice din anii 1970-1980 şi perioada războiului dintre Iran şi Iraq. În 2007, Persepolis devine film. La noi, romanul a fost publicat de Editura Art.
